Rachel Johnson has the well-earned distinction of being the first employee of Coeur’s Development Program, or CDP, program. Rachel’s first experience with Coeur, in fact in mining, was during her summer internship in 2016. Recognizing her drive, curiosity and passion for the business, Rachel was selected to join Coeur’s CDP program and has continued to thrive and excel, currently serving as a Project Engineer on the Corporate Projects team.
Q: Tell us about your experience in Coeur’s Development Program.
A: I was fortunate to join Coeur’s CDP program in May 2017 and I have grown exponentially, both personally and professionally since. Prior to joining Coeur as an intern in 2016, I had no experience in mining but soon realized the opportunities and impact that mining has, and this is really something that pumps my adrenaline.
Being part of Coeur’s CDP program, I have been able to express my interests in different areas of the company, travel to the various mines and work with the most supportive and amazing colleagues. The program allows me to understand so many parts of our business and see everything from a whole – and develop my interests along the way.
Q: What does a typical day for a project engineer look like?
A: On any given day, I could be working on one of our major projects or helping a site fill out a Project Execution Plan for potential future work. There really is no such thing as a typical day and I am fortunate to touch on so many parts of our business that it really keeps me on my toes! What is very important about my role is that it directly supports key business projects – and these projects are the future of our business!
Q: What’s it like working for Coeur?
A: Working for Coeur has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I’m continually developing my skillset with the different opportunities that are available, but it’s the people that I work with that make my job what it is. My coworkers have always been there for me, and they feel like family.
In 2020, I lost my dad to COVID. I never would have imagined the support that came from my coworkers during this time. In fact, a year later, on the anniversary of my father’s passing, it was my birthday, I was visiting our Silvertip mine when the crew surprised me with cupcakes and decorations. They knew that the day was going to be hard for me and I feel beyond lucky to experience such a caring culture at Coeur. It’s exciting to go to work every day knowing the support I have behind me.
Q: What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining Coeur?
A: Working at Coeur has been a unique experience and I am grateful that I was given the opportunity to work in this industry – and that Coeur took a chance on me. You cannot grow if you don’t try new career opportunities. If you join our company, I cannot wait to welcome you aboard and share this thriving culture with you!
